ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE SALT GLAZED STONEWARE JUG
ATTRIBUTED TO THE POTTERS OF TUSCARAWAS COUNTY OHIO
1860 - 1890
Antique primitive salt glazed stoneware three gallon jug attributed to the potters of Tuscarawas County, Ohio in the second half of the 1800's.
The history of Tuscarawas County in the 19th Century is at best a bit sketchy. The towns of Uhricksville and Newport and others housed some of Ohio's most prolific and under-heralded potters.
This is a three gallon size jug with a beehive form and a sturdy strap handle. The jug features these two enormous tulips with associated leaves and stem. The tulips are done by hand and brush with ample amounts of blue cobalt glaze. Under the tulips there is a huge capacity scripted "3" surrounded by these great tornados as embellishment. These tornados have now been tied to the potters of Tuscarawas County with stamped examples now found.
This jug is completely over the top, with the stark contrast between the blue glaze and the light colored clay. The jug is no lightweight at 18lbs. The jug is 15 1/2" tall and 10" wide at the base. There is a small chip on the lip edge but the jug is in excellent condition.
The legendary potters of Tuscarawas County and Tulips and Tornados!

Buyers of antiques or farmhouse design elements on our auctions should know that these items are used and not new and that what we offer can show some evidence of wear and flaws in their manufacture and possible condition issues, both structural and/or cosmetic. Please refer to the photos for condition evaluation and use our descriptions as a basic overall guide to the item's condition, but not a complete
analysis of the items exact condition, appearance or value. Listing space on eBay allows for only twelve pictures and a limited amount of descriptive characters. O
ur descriptions only include issues of condition
after
the actual making of the item. Buyers of our stoneware should be aware that mention of flaws during the making of these primitive and antique items will be
discussed
in our descriptions, only when applicable, as an
informative
characterization. All primitive antique stoneware examples have flaws in the making and these generally are not included in our descriptions, so please use the pictures. Most flaws and condition issues after the making, are made note of in our descriptions, and are only opinions and observations of the seller, however, the buyer/bidder should be aware that only the photos provided in our listings should be used to evaluate and determine decisions concerning condition, value and bidding/purchasing.
All purchases are "as is" and final. Bidding is a commitment to purchase and failure to follow through with the purchase after bidding in good faith within the limitations of the eBay agreement will result in
expulsion
from our auctions and a negative report to eBay.
