    Original gouache with gold on heavy French illustration board: circa 1950: sheet/image size: 13 x 19 1/2 inches: signed lower right " Matsoukis ": pencil notation verso ( see photo ): new archival mat: framed under plexiglas in a new silver grey toned woodgrain style frame ( see close up ): frame size is 20 x 26 inches.
    NOTE: This work comes with a fascinating biographical package on the artist including set photos and many newspaper rave reviews of his artwork. Affixed to the back of the frame is a 1949 Paris photograph of Matsoukis.
    Theophane Matsoukis was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1916. His family originally came from the Greek Ionian island of Kefalonia. In 1933 he established his studio in Paris ( first at the Rue Joseph Bara and later at the Rue de Arras and the Rue du Repos ) . In the 1940s he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts du Louvre , the Sorbonne, and the Ecole Speciale de Architecture in Paris.
    Active in Paris during the golden years of the Paris opera, ballet & theatre, Matsoukis emersed himself in the set and costume designs of his contemporaries, Benois, Bakst, Gontcharova, Picasso, and worked with his friend, the artist, Rouben Ter-Arutunian, associated with Balanchine and the Ballet Imperial, the Diagalev and the Ballet Russe.
    By the late 1940s, Matsoukas had attained national recognition in France for his bold Modernist set designs and imaginative original costume designs. Matsoukis was honored with commissions to create design sets and costumes for opera, theatre and ballet presentations throughout Europe, including -
