    Born in Indiana on Jan. 2, 1901. Coffing was a resident of Los Angeles by 1932. He lived in Sierra Madre while employed by the Electro Optical Systems. He died in Pasadena on Jan. 16, 1980.

    This painting is a 30” high by 25” wide oil on canvas, probably painted in the 1930’s in the Los Angeles California area.
    A 25” x 30” size is an old standard, used in the 1870’s into the 1940’s.
    It was replaced by the 24” x 30” size.
    Signed in pencil 2 places on the back.
    The age of this painting makes it special (1930s-40s).  Starting in the 1960's, many new artists depicted Black Americans on their canvases.  Works prior to this time are far less common.
